The Reckless CEO

Uncovering Worthiness And Reaching For Best-Case Scenarios

Listen Later

Michael McGovern, the host of the Reckless CEO podcast, recently returned from a trip to Arizona to attend an Upgrade event. The Upgrade event focused on neurolinguistic programming (NLP) and the reprogramming of unconscious memories embedded in our psyche from a young age. The Upgrade event coordinator used the example of a father telling his son that he can't have everything in life, as a way to show how we can have these unconscious memories embedded in us without knowing it. They explained that we only use 10% of our brain, and these memories can continue to manifest in our lives and affect the way we make decisions. Michael then went on to talk about his recent trip, and the conversations he had with mentors and how it has helped him to better understand the importance of addressing these unconscious memories and reprogramming them.
Michael is discussing how he went through a 21 day course that taught him how to break out of his normal mindset. As part of the process, he was asked to create a list of 100 items and experiences that he wanted in life. This was to help him think bigger, outside of the normal programming he had been exposed to from his family and friends. After feeling like he had a good grasp on the concepts, he went to Arizona to listen to a mentor of his speak. During the second day of the event, he was reminded of the importance of creating a list of items and experiences and that he should continue to expand the list as he goes.
Michael was attending a conference with his mentor, a successful entrepreneur. As his mentor finished speaking, the speaker felt a sense of insecurity, questioning why someone like him was even worthy of having such an influential person in his life. After the mentor's performance, he became a celebrity and people were asking for his attention. The speaker felt unworthy of the friendship and wondered why the mentor even wanted to be around him. He then watched William, the owner of Upgrade, take the stage and the speaker found himself reflecting on the opportunities he had been given through the mentor's friendship.
William, an influential mentor, asked a group to close their eyes and think of the feeling that was holding them back the most. The speaker had difficulty in locating the feeling, which made them feel unworthy and frustrated. The next day, they shared their feelings with William and he urged them to talk. The speaker was confused and frustrated with themselves and couldn't explain the feelings they had. William asked the speaker to talk and share their feelings in order to gain clarity. The speaker realized that they were feeling unworthy and that they had potentially buried the feeling so deep that it was hard to identify.
