On this episode of the Undaunted Pursuit Podcast, we sit down with Dr. Jonathan Eckert, educator, researcher, author, and the Copple Professor of Educational Leadership at Baylor University, to talk about his new book, The Happiness Crisis: How Adversity Can Build a Resilient and Joyful Next Generation.

Our culture often tells parents that the goal is to keep our children happy, safe, comfortable, and successful. But Dr. Eckert challenges that idea. What if protecting kids from every disappointment, failure, risk, and struggle is actually keeping them from developing the very things they need most?

In this conversation, we dig into the difference between temporary happiness and lasting joy, why struggle doesn't automatically mean something has gone wrong, and how parents, educators, coaches, and church leaders can help young people develop the courage to face difficult things instead of running from them.

Dr. Eckert brings more than 30 years of experience working with students and educators. His career began as a middle school teacher and basketball coach before earning his doctorate from Vanderbilt University. He later served in the U.S. Department of Education under both the Bush and Obama administrations and now serves as the Copple Professor of Educational Leadership at Baylor University and executive director of the Baylor Center for School Leadership.

🌴 New state. New scenery. New cab. Same God. Same mission.

Truck Cab Devotionals has officially made it to Florida! Well… maybe Van Cab Devotionals for a little while. 😂

After a huge transition for our family, we’re settling into a new season and following where we believe God has called us. In this episode, Aaron shares a quick update from Florida before continuing our journey through Exodus with Exodus 17 and the water from the rock.

The Israelites are thirsty—again.

They’re frustrated, complaining, questioning, and convinced they need something immediately in order to survive. And if we’re being truthful, thousands of years later we really aren’t that different.

We’re always thirsting for something.

Comfort. Security. Money. Success. Approval. A better job. A different situation. The next blessing.

But what happens when God’s provision doesn’t come the way we expect?

In Exodus 17, God gives Moses an instruction that makes very little sense in the natural:

Take your staff and strike the rock.

Moses doesn’t argue. He doesn’t brainstorm a better solution. He simply obeys—and God provides.

💥 God takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary.

But this story points to something much greater than physical water in the wilderness.

Paul reveals in 1 Corinthians 10:4 that the Rock pointed to Christ.

Jesus is the Rock. He was struck for our sin, and from Him comes the living water our souls desperately need—a well that will never run dry.

So the question isn’t simply, “What do you need?”

The question is:

What are you thirsting for?

Are you looking to the things of this world to satisfy something that only Jesus can fill?

And when God calls you somewhere uncomfortable or asks you to do something that doesn’t make sense, will you trust Him enough to obey before you see the provision?

The harvest is plentiful, the workers are few, and there is no time to waste comparing your walk with someone else's.

In this episode of Truck Cab Devotionals, Aaron dives into Matthew 20:1–16 and Jesus' Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard to unpack a powerful truth about God's grace, salvation, comparison, and the work Jesus has called His followers to do.

And this episode marks something else special: it's the final Truck Cab Devotional recorded from this truck cab. By the time you're hearing this, the Szudajski family is already on the road, heading toward a new location and a new chapter. The truck cab may be changing, but the mission remains the same—follow Jesus, share the Gospel, and get to work in the harvest.

🌾 THE HARVEST IS HERE

In Matthew 20, Jesus tells the story of a landowner who goes looking for workers throughout the day.

Some start early in the morning.

Some come later.

And some aren't brought into the vineyard until the eleventh hour.

When the workday ends, the landowner's generosity creates a problem: the workers who had been there the longest begin comparing what they received with those who came later.

Instead of celebrating the harvest, they grumbled over the reward.

And there's a warning in that for us.

How easily can we begin comparing our faithfulness, sacrifice, ministry, calling, or years of following Jesus with someone else's?

Jesus reminds us:

«"The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few." — Matthew 9:37»

There is a harvest happening right now.

There are people who need Jesus.

There is Gospel work to be done.

And we don't have time to stand around comparing ourselves with the person working beside us.

🙌 GRACE ISN'T A PAYCHECK

Whether you've followed Jesus for decades or surrendered your life to Christ yesterday, eternal life isn't something you've earned.

Romans 6:23 makes that clear:

«"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."»

The wages we've earned?

Death.

The eternal life we're offered?

A gift.

Romans 5:8 reminds us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

That's the Gospel.

God's grace isn't reserved for the person who has been in church the longest. It's not reserved for pastors, missionaries, Bible scholars, or people who seem to have everything together.

The invitation of Jesus extends to sinners like you and me.

So when another person comes to Jesus—even at the eleventh hour—we shouldn't respond like the workers who had been there all day.

We should celebrate because another person has entered the harvest!

🔥 STOP COMPARING & GET TO WORK

The question isn't:

"Why did they get the same gift I did?"

The better question is:

"Who else still needs to hear about that gift?"

If we've counted the cost and chosen to follow Jesus, then we have work to do.

Not because our works purchase salvation.

Not because we can earn eternal life.

But because we have been saved by grace and called into the mission of Jesus Christ.

The storm is on the horizon.

Tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

The harvest is plentiful.

So let's stop playing the comparison game and get to work.

You can’t live today on yesterday’s manna.

Coming to you from Day 4 of fire camp, Aaron is dealing with cold nights, hot days, giant bugs, ants under the cot, and even the unforgettable experience of a wet-wipe “shower” in a porta-potty. 😂 But in the middle of the uncomfortable conditions, God has provided something incredibly valuable: time to slow down, reflect, and spend time in His Word.

In this episode of Truck Cab Devotionals, we continue through Exodus 15 and 16 and discover a powerful connection between Israel’s journey through the wilderness, God’s daily provision of manna, and our own daily dependence on Jesus Christ.

🍞 You Can't Live on Yesterday's Manna

After crossing the Red Sea, the Israelites quickly find themselves facing another problem: bitter water.

But God provides.

Through a tree, the bitter water becomes sweet and drinkable. And that moment points us toward something even greater—the work of Jesus Christ.

Through a tree—the cross—Jesus stepped into the bitterness of this broken world and offered us something far greater: living water, eternal life, and true joy found in Him.

Then, in Exodus 16, Israel begins grumbling again.

They're hungry.

They're frustrated.

They're wondering how God is going to provide.

And once again… God provides.

He rains bread from heaven.

Manna.

But there was something Israel needed to learn: God's provision required daily trust and obedience.

They couldn't stockpile yesterday's manna and expect it to sustain them today. They had to wake up each morning trusting that God would provide again.

And we aren't that different.

Sometimes we try to survive spiritually on:

- Yesterday's prayer.

- Yesterday's Bible reading.

- Yesterday's breakthrough.

- Yesterday's blessing.

- Yesterday's encounter with God.

But Jesus didn't call us into a relationship where we occasionally check in.

Jesus is our Daily Bread.

We need Him today.

And tomorrow.

And the day after that.

🙏 God's Provision and Our Obedience

Throughout Exodus 15–16, we repeatedly see the connection between God's provision and Israel's obedience.

God gave them instructions about gathering manna.

Gather what you need for today.

Trust Me with tomorrow.

And on the sixth day, gather enough for the Sabbath—because tomorrow you're going to rest.

When Israel ignored God's instructions, the manna spoiled.

When they went looking for manna on the Sabbath, there wasn't any.

Why?

Because God wasn't only teaching them how to gather food.

He was teaching them how to trust Him.

God's commands aren't designed to keep us from experiencing life. They're given for our good and teach us how to live fully dependent upon Him.

🛑 Sometimes Obedience Means REST

We live in a culture that celebrates the grind.

"I'll sleep when I'm dead."

"Keep pushing."

"Never stop."

But constantly running without stopping to rest, reflect, worship, and recognize God's goodness isn't necessarily faithfulness.

Sometimes obedience looks like stopping.

The Sabbath reminds us that our lives don't depend entirely on how hard we work.

God is still God when we rest.

So slow down.

Remember what God has done.

Spend time in His presence.

Feed on His Word.

And find your rest and joy in Him.

What do you do when the enemy is closing in, your back is against the wall, and you can't see a way forward? Trust God—because your impossible situation may be exactly where He is preparing to make a way.

In this Truck Cab Devotional, Aaron dives into Exodus 14 and the story of Moses, the Israelites, and the parting of the Red Sea to uncover a powerful lesson about trusting God in difficult times, overcoming fear, walking by faith, and obeying God when the path ahead looks impossible.

Israel had Pharaoh's army closing in behind them and the Red Sea directly in front of them.

There was nowhere to run.

No visible escape.

No human solution.

BUT GOD.

Sometimes what looks like aimless wandering may actually be God's leading.

What feels like being stuck may actually be God's preparation.

And what looks like an impossible path forward may be exactly where God is preparing to demonstrate His power.

Fear Not. Stand Firm. Trust God.

In Exodus 14:13–14, Moses tells the Israelites:

"Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD."

And then comes this incredible reminder:

"The LORD will fight for you."

Israel had already witnessed God's miraculous power. They had watched Him deliver them from slavery in Egypt. They were being led through the wilderness by the pillar of cloud and pillar of fire.

Yet when circumstances became frightening, they immediately began questioning God.

How often do we do the same thing?

We pray:

"God, use me."

"God, lead me."

"God, get me out of this situation."

Then God starts moving, the road becomes uncomfortable, and suddenly we're wondering why He brought us there.

But just because you don't understand where God is leading doesn't mean God isn't leading.

Sometimes Faith Means Moving Forward

Then God asks Moses a surprising question:

"Why do you cry to me?"

God had already demonstrated His faithfulness.

He had already demonstrated His power.

Now it was time to move forward in obedience.

There are moments when faith means standing firm and waiting on God.

But there are also moments when trusting God means taking the next step even when you can't see what happens afterward.

Moses obeyed.

God parted the Red Sea.

The Israelites walked across on dry ground.

And the enemy they thought was going to destroy them was completely defeated by the power of God.

God made a way where there appeared to be no way.

God Goes Before You—and Stands Behind You

One of the most powerful details in Exodus 14 happens before the Red Sea even parts.

The presence of God that had been going before the Israelites moves behind them, standing between God's people and the Egyptian army.

Think about that.

The God who was leading them forward was also protecting them from behind.

God hadn't abandoned Israel because the enemy was approaching.

He was right there in the middle of it.

Throughout this Truck Cab Devotional, Aaron also explores how these events ultimately point us toward Jesus Christ and the hope, protection, salvation, and victory we have in Him.

Jesus goes before us.

Jesus stands in the gap.

Jesus is our hope.

Jesus is our salvation.

MOVE FORWARD.

Because when circumstances say there's no way…

When fear says it's over…
