Friendship is a tree that bears many fruits: false and true, fairweather and fast, old and new. Keep your friends close, the mortals say, but when hearts and faces change with the seasons and the whirligig of time makes strangers of us all, who can tell who their true friends are. And closeness is a tricky proposition in a neglected garden where feral, choking growth has sprouted thorns.

As the stage is set to meet an absent sovereign, the Circus meet the second claimant to the Folly’s throne, Tingley Grimbles makes a new friend and grows a backbone, Fimbly Dun catches up with an old friend, and Lady Esmerelda Cortada of the Fanciest Jigs hears some bad news she’d already suspected and begins to plot how to prune these brambles...
