Forgiveness on SermonAudio

Under Law, Under Sin, Under Grace

Listen Later

What does the Apostle Paul mean when he says we are "under the law," "under sin," or "under grace"? These expressions are foundational to understanding the book of Romans, yet they are often misunderstood. In this lesson, we will examine how Paul uses the word under in different contexts and discover that each phrase describes a person's relationship to God's covenant, the power of sin, and the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. By tracing Paul's argument through Romans 2, 6, 7, and 8, we will learn the difference between being under the law's condemnation, under sin's enslaving power, and under the liberating reign of God's grace. We will also see why salvation is more than forgiveness of sins—it is deliverance from sin's dominion through the indwelling Holy Spirit, who enables believers to live in obedience to Christ. This lesson will help participants read Romans more carefully, avoid common misunderstandings about the Christian's relationship to God's law, and gain a deeper appreciation for the freedom and new life found in Christ.
