Welcome
We are in the 2nd week of our message series – The Underdog’s Playbook.
Last week we talked about being stuck in the shadows and the strategy of stepping out.
Today I want to talk to you about going From Serving to Slaying: Your Unseen Path to Victory.
I was a young teenager who went to Church. I noticed they needed help…
I did small things that would help. Those small humble things became BIG THINGS in my life.
Some of my best friendships were formed while helping out.
Some of my greatest victories and miracles occurred while serving.
Sometimes, the path to our greatest victories doesn’t start with power or status—but simple, humble service.
Do you have a humble story like this?
Can you point to something small and humble and say… “I am so glad I did that. That was a BIG DEAL for me.”
Let’s be honest—
We live in a culture that glorifies status, not service.
And the message we hear over and over is: -“Crush the competition.” → Instead of helping others, dominate them.
-“Make a name for yourself.” → Success is all about self-promotion.
-“If you want something done right, do it yourself.” → Don’t rely on others—just take control.
-“Look out for number one.” → Prioritize yourself over everyone else.
-“Fake it till you make it.” → Appear successful, even if you’re not actually growing.
-“Nice guys finish last.” → Being kind or serving others will hold you back.
-“No one is going to give it to you—take it.” → Forget humility; force your way to the top.
But what if…
This is what God’s kingdom is all about.
And David’s story shows us exactly how this works.
The Valley of Elah
We know that David arrives at the valley of Elah. …ends up facing and defeating a giant named Goliath, but how did he get there?
Do you know? Many people know about the fight, but few know why David arrived at the fight.
In 1 Samuel 17:17, David’s father Jesse sends him on an errand.
He had a picnic basket… is that your picture of a warrior?
He was the earliest example of uber eats, or door dash.
He was serving his dad and older brothers… is that your picture of a king?
David’s journey to the battlefield didn’t start with a sword—it started with a sandwich.
David wasn’t asked to fight. He was asked to serve.
Through Service, David became a Champion.
Servants are Champions.
This is counter intuitive.
The servant seems like the underdog.
The champion is surely the one being served…
Because David was faithful in serving, he ended up in the right place at the right time….
And that’s when he saw Goliath, and went out to defeat him.
We would not know sword wielding David, if there was never a sandwich delivering David.
Underdog Strategy:
1. Show Up to Serve, Not to Be Seen
David’s story is incredible—but he’s not the ultimate example of this.
Jesus is.
Jesus didn’t come demanding power. He came serving.
(Matthew 23:11, NIV)
And then He proved it.
(Mark 10:45, NIV)
And in the end… His humility brought about a victory that changed the world.
2. Be Faithful in the Small Things
-Instead of looking for a bigger opportunity, start being faithful in the smaller ones.
People who serve are valuable.
People who are faithful are valuable.
-they receive PROMOTION!
3. Trust God to Turn Your Service Into Strength
Stop worrying about the outcome—serve with excellence and trust God with the results.
We serve a God who notices our small acts of faith.
4. Meekness is NOT Weakness
What is meekness? The majority answer – weakness.
Meekness – Strength under control
Jackhammer example – crushing power.
Control the power to do something precise.
David was not weak… but he was meek.
Jesus was not weak… but meek.
God’s plan is that you would be STRONG & POWERFUL but that you would control your strength and power.
Ever see power out of control? Bad! Abuse!
(Matthew 5:5, NIV)
The strategy is not to crush others, but bless others.
The strategy is carry provision, and slay giants along the way.
From Serving to Slaying: Your Unseen Path to Victory
What should you do?
Some of you are…
But what if your big moment starts with small service?
David didn’t wait for a battle. He served.
Jesus didn’t wait for recognition. He served.
Where are you serving?
Let’s make Serving easy…
Text #NEXT STEPS to 469-467-8111
Imagine what would happen if we all lived like David…
David showed up with a sandwich… and left with a victory.
Jesus picked up a towel… and changed the world.
What might God do through your faithfulness today?
Time to Act
1. Start Where You Are
Don’t wait for a bigger opportunity. Be faithful now.
2. Serve With No Strings Attached
David wasn’t looking for a reward—he was just serving his brothers.
Jesus wasn’t serving to get something—He was serving to give.
3. Trust That God Sees You
God sees your faithfulness… hard work… generosity
