Underdog’s Playbook Title

Everyone loves an underdog story.

It’s why we get chills when Rocky goes the distance.

It’s why we cheer a last-place team when they faceoff against the champs.
It’s why we watch March Madness, hoping for that Cinderella story.

But here’s the problem—when YOU’RE the underdog, it doesn’t feel inspiring.

It feels like…
-Can’t win.
-Overlooked
-Outmatched
-Sidelined & stuck

And the giant in front of you? It looks unbeatable.

But what if you’ve been looking at your battle all wrong?

What if God has already written a playbook for underdogs like you?

That’s what this series is all about. The Underdog’s Playbook.

The most legendary underdog story ever told—David vs. Goliath.
NOT just a feel-good story about a little guy beating the odds.

David had a strategy, and in the next six weeks, we’re unlocking those same strategies so you can take down the giants in your life.

March 9: “From Serving to Slaying: Your Unseen Path to Victory”

Service & humility is a winning strategy.

March 16 “The Giant Is Blocking Your View: How to See Past Struggle”

Many saw a giant. David saw an opportunity. The way you see your problems determines whether you’ll be paralyzed or promoted.

March 23 “All Gas, No Brakes: Stop Waiting, Start Winning”

What if you RAN at the giant? Recognize the time for action.

March 30 “Poor Giant: Flip the Script”

Everyone thought “Poor David.”  But David flipped the script and said “poor giant.”

April 6 “Killer Instinct: Permission to Slay”

Champions finish the fight.

This is your playbook. This is your strategy.

MAKE PLANS TO BE HERE EVERY WEEK!

The fight is already won—are you ready to step in?

Today we are talking about being Stuck in the Shadows and how to stand out.

Strategy – 1 – Stuck in the Shadows? Step Out!

Have you ever felt invisible? …working hard, doing your best, but no one notices?

-On the job or school… improving but ignored.
-In your family… dependable but dismissed.

-In your faith… Does God even notice?

This message is for you.

We love celebrating champions.

  • When a team wins the Super Bowl, we throw a parade.
  • When an artist wins a Grammy, they give a speech, and we all cheer.
  • When someone builds a wildly successful company, we call them a genius.
  • But we don’t talk about what came before the victory.

    • The rejections before the record deal.
    • The failed businesses before the success.
    • The injuries, struggles, and doubts before the championship moment.
    • We love the highlight reel… but ignore the hard work, loneliness, and times no one believed in them.

And that’s exactly what happened with David.

Before he was a giant slayer… before he was king… he was forgotten in a field.

But God specializes in calling people out of the shadows.

      Turn to 1 Samuel 16

God sends the prophet Samuel to anoint the next king of Israel. But instead of sending him to a palace, He sends him to a small town named Bethlehem… to the house of a man named Jesse.

Jesse lines up sons to meet the prophet.
They come in order of the best options—the tall ones, the strong ones, the ones who look like kings.

Samuel looks at Jesse’s oldest son, Eliab, and thinks, This must be the guy!

      1 Samuel 16:6

      But what did God say?

      1 Samuel 16:7

One by one, Jesse’s sons step forward. And one by one, God looked at their heart and said NO.

      1 Samuel 16:10-11

      David wasn’t invited.
David wasn’t considered worthy of even being in the lineup.
David was stuck in the shadows.

      But God saw him.
      God saw David’s HEART!

You may feel overlooked, but God sees you.
Samuel says, “We’re not sitting down until he gets here.”

And the moment David arrives, God says:
      (1 Samuel 16:12, NIV)

The one no one noticed… was the one God had chosen.

This is a pattern with Jesus.

      • When Jesus chose His disciples, He didn’t pick religious elites—He picked fishermen, tax collectors, nobodies.
      • When Jesus saw Zacchaeus, the small tax collector that everyone hated, He said, I’m coming to your house today.
      • When Jesus rose from the dead, the first people He appeared to were women—who, in that culture, were looked down upon.
      • God consistently chooses the overlooked, the outcast, the underdog… because He sees what others don’t.

Some of you feel like David before the anointing.

You feel stuck in the shadows.
        -Forgotten.
        -Don’t have the right background.
        -Lack the right connections
        -The right qualifications.
        -Disadvantaged.

        But God sees you.

And just like David… He’s calling you… inviting you… anointing you.

Are you ready to step out from the shadows?

The challenge: If God has put something in your heart, don’t wait for permission from people who don’t see what God sees.

        David didn’t wait.
He was anointed king, but he went right back to the field. He kept serving, kept being faithful, kept trusting God’s plan.

And when the moment came—when Goliath stepped onto the battlefield—David was ready.

Because Preparation Happens in the Shadows.

David was preparing for his future victories.
        Are you preparing?

        So what is the strategy?

Underdog Strategy #1 : Step Out

        1. Step Out in Faith – Don’t wait for validation; trust that God sees you.
        2. Step Out with What You Have – Use your current skills, experiences, and resources.
        3. Step Out and Trust God – Obedience is your job; the outcome is His.
        4. Imagine what would happen if we all did this.

          • If we stopped waiting for permission and started owning our anointing.
          • If we stopped comparing ourselves to others and started preparing for our calling.
          • If we stopped hesitating and stepped into the moment God has placed in front of us.
          • David didn’t stay in the shadows.
            Neither should you.

            You are seen.
            You are called.
            You are anointed.

            CALL TO ACTION

            1. Start Owning Your Anointing

            • Stop waiting for someone to notice you. GOD ALREADY NOTICES!
            • You are chosen. You are called. Start living like it.
            • 2. Stop Comparing, Start Prepping

              • What’s one thing you can start doing this week to grow?
              • (Luke 16:10, NIV)
              • 3. Step Into the Moment—NOW.

                • Prayer prepares us for the battle.
                • Step out… Step into prayer, worship, transformation
                • ...more
