Welcome back to another episode with Jenny Ponzuric, where we dive deep into the realm of school psychology and educational support. Today, let's explore the critical topic of executive functioning skills and when it's essential to evaluate them.
As someone deeply entrenched in the world of school psychology for over two decades, I've come to understand the pivotal role executive functioning skills play in a student's academic success and overall well-being. But when should we assess these skills, and why are they so crucial?
Traumatic brain injuries are one scenario where evaluating executive functioning skills becomes imperative. The frontal lobe, responsible for many executive functions, is often affected in such injuries. Monitoring these skills post-injury is essential as the brain continues to develop through school age.
Moreover, anytime attention issues arise, it's prudent to delve deeper into related executive skills like response inhibition and task initiation. Whether attention concerns stem from ADHD or other factors, exploring executive functioning can provide invaluable insights into a student's needs.
Learning disabilities, while diverse in nature, often intersect with executive functioning challenges. When academic performance doesn't align with standardized testing or classroom observations, examining executive skills may uncover underlying issues impacting learning.
To further enrich your understanding, join me in the final session of our monthly training series on March 25th. We'll delve into the fundamentals of executive functioning, explore evaluation methods, and discuss practical strategies for supporting students struggling in this area.
Whether you're a seasoned professional or new to the field, this training offers a wealth of knowledge to enhance your practice. Visit my website, https://jennyponzuric.com/live-training/, to sign up for the session or access recordings of previous training sessions.
