Understanding Serpents, Part 6

Listen Later

What does it truly mean to be "wise as serpents and harmless as doves"? In this powerful and revealing message, Part 6 of the "Understanding Serpents" series, Apostle Shane Wall unpacks the spiritual wisdom we can glean from one of nature's most misunderstood creatures.

Have you ever felt blindsided by life's circumstances or the actions of others? Apostle Wall teaches that true accuracy in the spirit isn't about what you can see or hear in the natural, but about discerning and moving according to the Word and the Spirit of God within you.

Here are the author's notes from this week's message:

*- Just before Jesus sent His disciples out to minister, He gave them specific instructions:

Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

Matthew 10:16 (KJV)

*- Accuracy isn’t always about knowing everything. The disciples began with very little experiential knowledge. Sometimes, accuracy comes from being steady enough to wait and listen for God before striking. Serpents have extremely poor eyesight and cannot hear airborne sounds, so they can’t rely on those senses for awareness. Yet, they rarely miss what they’re meant to hit.

*- So, what are we striking?

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12 KJV

*- God’s Word doesn’t just give us rules—it sharpens our aim and strengthens our discernment. It reveals what’s in front of us and shows us how to move with wisdom to fulfill our God-given assignments. When Jesus said, “Be wise as serpents,” He wasn’t telling us to be sneaky. He was teaching us—among other things—to discern what’s before us before we respond.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Ephesians 6:12 KJV

*- Why are we forced to wrestle demons?

*- God permits them to tempt us.

*- Who are the powers, principalities, rulers of darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places?

*- principalities: The first demon encountered, who’s in charge of setting up the order, time, and place

of the evil to be done. That’s why it is called the principal demon.

*- This demon loves the element of initial shock and surprise that he delivers because the shock

bullies people into believing they’re powerless—not prepared to oppose the unexpected situation.

*- In one day of Job’s life, Sabeans stole his oxen, killed his servants, fire consumed his sheep, Chaldeans stole his camels, and a great wind collapsed a house—killing all of his children.

*- Principalities designed each event to feel instantaneous and overwhelming.

20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

Job 1:20-22 KJV

*- In terms of the evil forces we wrestle (Ephesians 6:12), who are the powers?
