The country is currently facing a poverty crisis, with an estimated 20% of households experiencing food insecurity. The situation is especially severe in provinces like the Eastern Cape. A South African Human Rights Commission investigation revealed that one in four children in the province suffers from stunted growth due to malnutrition, and the commission has called for the government to declare this hunger crisis a national disaster.
