The Sand Creek Massacre was an atrocity, an attack on Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians who had surrendered to the United States military in a desperate bid for peace. John Chivington (whose name still graces the road near where the massacre took place) with full knowledge of the situation led a band of untrained men to the area and set them loose on the camp, where they indiscriminately killed men women and children alike. Silas Soule stood against the assault by refusing to take part in the massacre and by testifying against Chivington at the hazard of his own life. This is the story of true evil, and the story of the good that stood against it, no matter the cost, no matter the result.
