• Red light disappears within the first 10 to 20 feet underwater, followed by orange around 25 to 30 feet and yellow by 50 to 60 feet, which is why everything looks blue-green at depth without correction.

• Distance between your camera and subject matters as much as depth — light travels from the surface to your subject and back to your lens, losing color along the entire path, so getting closer preserves significantly more color.

• Red filters work great in clear, shallow water between 15 and 60 feet, but strobes and video lights provide better correction for close subjects at any depth by bringing full-spectrum light with you.

• You cannot recover color in post-processing that was never captured by your camera sensor, so minimizing shooting distance during the dive is more important than any editing technique.
