This past Monday the UN marked three years since the start of the Russia/Ukraine war. At the UN General Assembly, European countries sought to introduce amendments overconcerns that the text neither mentioned Russia’s aggression nor
proposed a resolution to the conflict in line with the UN Charter. However, the amendments either didn’t receive enough votes for passage or Russia vetoed them.
Russia and China voted with the United States on passing its oneline resolution while five European countries including France, Denmark, Slovenia, Greece and the United Kingdom (UK) abstained. It’s unclear how the US-initiated legally binding resolution will move the peace process forward as it contains very little substance and makes no demands on the parties but highlights a widening approach to ending the war between traditional allies, the US and Europe.
