Our passage comes from 2 Samuel 6. David tries twice to bring the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. One time results in someone’s death, the other in complete victory/celebration.

The difference between the two is the condition of David's heart. God was not willing to “look the other way” because in both attempts David had good intentions. He stopped at nothing to root out David’s pride and replace it with reverence. He knows when left unchecked, destruction ensues.
