UNEXPLAINED: Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC)

Listen Later

This week Sophie talks us through the various reported cases of Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC). SHC is the phenomenon where people suddenly and inexplicably catch on fire seemingly from the inside out… And then usually die.

We'll examine the case of the drunken Milanese Knight in the 1600s (or 1400s depending on your sources!), the sleeping Parisian woman. Before examining arguably the most famous case of SHC, that of Mary Reeser in Flordia, before examining a series of more recent cases that happened in German, London and Ireland.

We'll then present theories and potential explanations such as intemperance in the early 1900s to depression in the 1970's, to a more scientific explanation developed in 1990s by Dr John De Haan - the Wick effect.
