It started with a phone call in the middle of the night. On February 21, 1997, a man named Mel Waters called Art Bell’s Coast to Coast AM to report something impossible on his property in rural Ellensburg, Washington: a hole with no bottom.

He claimed he had lowered 80,000 feet of fishing line into the earth without hitting a floor. He claimed it didn't echo. He claimed it brought a dead dog back to life. Then, he claimed the government took it all away?!?
