Within a period of two and a half years, Joe would live through the molestation of his only grandchild by her paternal grandfather, the murder of his only daughter by the same man, and the loss of his wife to lung cancer.
The final straw was losing guardianship of his granddaughter to her father, who was arrested and pleaded guilty to charges related to his actions before and after his daughter's murder.
