Unity

Listen Later

Message Notes:
John 3:25-26 (NLT) A debate broke out between John's disciples and a certain Jew over ceremonial cleansing. So John's disciples came to him and said, "Rabbi, the man you met on the other side of the Jordan River, the one you identified as the Messiah, is also baptizing people. And everybody is going to him instead of coming to us."
John 3:27-30 (NLT) You yourselves know how plainly I told you, 'I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the way for him.'…Therefore, I am filled with joy at his success. He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.
How to Experience Unity
1. Unity Begins With Our Relationship With God
The root of most conflict and division is selfishness.
John 17:20-21 (NLT) "I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
2. Unity Happens When We Shift Our Focus
Eph 4:2-6 (NLT) Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all.
Unity is More of Him and Less of Me
Acts 2:42 (NLT) All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord's Supper), and to prayer.
1 Cor 1:10 (NLT) I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.
3. Unity Demands That We Resolve Conflict
Matt 18:15-17 (NLT) "If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church.
Acts 2:47 (NLT) And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
