I am beginning the most important series of sermons from the Bible in my 56 years of preaching. You are going to love this. I believe that and let me tell you why. It is the most important truth the church could hear. So much hangs on our learning and living this out. It is mainly designed for Christians but it will be a huge blessing for anyone who needs it, and that means pretty much everyone in this fractured world. It’s called UNITY. It means oneness, a condition of harmony and accord, parts that constitute a whole, a complex wholeness. “E Pluribus Unum” is the way our Founding Fathers said it, the coming together of the 13 colonies to form the United States of America. Out of many – one. When the many become one, without losing the uniqueness of each of the many. Harmony – a pleasing arrangement of parts, to come into voluntary agreement. “One accord” is the way the Bible puts it. It’s how the church started out, but it was quickly lost. Our aim is to regain it and live it in this modern world of division: nations in conflict, homes torn apart, and church splits.
Unity has to do with people; unity among people is what creates community. It’s not just people living near each other; community is people being unified in love and purpose, living and working together. When Crocodile Dundee first stepped onto the streets of NYC he said, “Cool…! All these people living together because they love each other!” Peace can mean just the absence of conflict. Pieces of a puzzle laid separately on a table can be at peace just lying there; until they’re put together there is no unity.
