Universal basic income is the most-studied idea for life after work — and after fifty years of real experiments on four continents, the verdict is in and it is double-edged. Unconditional cash reliably cuts poverty, improves health, keeps kids in school, and, contrary to the oldest fear about it, does not make people stop working. Yet the very people who funded the biggest trials — Sam Altman among them — are quietly walking away, from "income" toward "ownership." Why abandon an idea that works?

Because it works on the wrong problem. A cheque restores a wage; it cannot restore the structure, status, purpose and belonging that a job quietly supplies — the exact things a genuinely post-work AI economy threatens to remove. This episode maps the whole debate: who in AI called UBI inevitable and who reversed; basic income versus negative income tax versus a job guarantee, and what "basic" really means; what Mincome, Finland, Stockton, Kenya, Germany and Altman's own study actually found; the bill nobody wants to read; and the one finding — that the trials can't tell us what a permanent, universal floor would do — that should make every confident claim about UBI sound a little less certain.
