Unlearning the past

Listen Later

Looking to overcome the difficulties of the past requires a healthy understanding of what you took from your experiences. The unlearning process is one of the most overlooked aspects of emotional wellbeing, commonly referred to as mental health.

Our growth or healing journey will be hampered if we don’t realise that some of our truths may have long since expired and are no longer relevant to what we’re trying to achieve. The craziest part is that most often, how we believe life works is a perspective that we formed in our childhood. It’s a perspective that was developed in response to how we felt about how we were seen or heard, or not seen and not heard during our formative years.

Yet, we treat those perceptions as fact because that is what shaped our sense of self that subsequently informed how we approached many of our relationships and challenges in life.

Reflection and introspection, from a perspective of wanting to understand rather than to confirm, is what creates an opportunity for us to unlearn what is no longer true, or perhaps to even realise what was never true to begin with.
