Publisher's Summary:
As an F-16 fighter pilot, Darwin Cole was a family man on top of his world. Now he's a washout, drunk and alone, haunted by the memory of an Afghan child running for her life from the Predator drone he 'piloted. Reluctantly, Cole teams up with three journalists seeking to discover the identity of the anonymous intelligence operative who called the shots in that ill-fated mission.
Critic Reviews:
"An utterly compelling thriller and quite simply the best" (The Sunday Telegraph)

...disappointing... again...
I have read all of Fesperman's books. Unfortunately, like many authors, his writing seems to be declining in quality. The plot, the characters, the setting - all seemed trite, banal and shallow. I felt no empathy for any of the protagonists; and although many plots are often "predictable", and this does not detract from the book, this one was mindlessly predictable. I really lost interest in the book, and, much to my consternation, subsequently skimmed the last third of the book (without losing much of anything).
I am saddened that his last several books have been so disappointing, as some of his earlier books were amazing. His next book needs to hit some high points, otherwise he risks falling into the " James Patterson " book mill category.
Gripping from the get go!
A cracker! Captain Darwin Cole, top-gun fighter pilot transferred to flying Predator drones, begins to be sickened by what he sees and does. Especially when some of his missions go badly - and inexplicably - wrong. He drops out, and teams up with three journalists to try to uncover who's screwing whom and how.
Drones: a hot topic - what they do, and some of the truly frightening things they almost certainly will soon be able to do. The FBI and CIA: behaving badly, but then true-grit Americans don't like the Feds - though the US Army also seems to have its share of rotten apples. Small Band takes on Huge Behemoth: David meets Goliath in cyberspace. This book has lots going for it, and then some.
What makes it so readable? Sheer storytelling, to begin with. A great story, with lots of convincing twists and turns. Good cyberwar procedurals. The pace is cracking, the dialogue taut, the scene-setting brisk and minimal.
And the characterisation is excellent; no cardboard cut-outs, everyone is 3.5 dimensional, same as in real life. The goodies who turn out to be baddies recognise the fact that they are harming others, the baddies who become goodies are never Simon pure.
So what's not to like? Well, it's a pretty standard thriller line: small guys go up against dirty-tricks big guys, slowly uncover leads, get a couple of breaks, arrive at the grand finale. But so what, Shakespeare copied other people's plots, and he seems to be doing pretty good.
Drones are here to stay
The book portrays the drama behind piloting a drone from a remote site. The pilot is even more removed from the action then in flying a plane. The consequences are more removed. A lot of collateral damage is possible. This book describes the effects that killing innocent civilians and children can have on the victims and those operating the drones. More than that the people from above giving the orders can be anonymous like on a chat line. Who gave the orders that caused the collateral damage? Will they take responsibility? Or is it on the pilot? That is the central theme of this story.
