Unpacking Land Expropriation Act

The Land Expropriation Act being signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa has caused major debate among political parties with some threatening to take legal action over section 12(3) surrounding nil compensation payable for the expropriation of land. Some civil society organizations have shared their concern surrounding the authority given to the Minister of Public Works and raised concerns given and how that could impact the release of regulations.

The Act deals with the process by which the state can take private property for public use, under specific conditions.
