In 2010, a search for missing escort Shannan Gilbert led police to a horrifying discovery along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach, Long Island — the remains of multiple women hidden in the brush.

The victims, later known as the Gilgo Four, were Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello. As investigators searched further, more victims were discovered, revealing a pattern of killings that may stretch back decades.

For years the case remained unsolved. Then in 2023, Long Island architect Rex Heuermann was arrested and charged in several of the murders.
