Cold sores virus (HSV-1) is a highly contagious virus that causes cold sores around the mouth and lips. After the initial infection, the virus stays dormant in nerve cells and can reactivate during times of stress, illness, or weakened immunity, leading to recurrent outbreaks. In addition to affecting the facial nerves, HSV-1 can potentially travel along nerves to the brain, where it can also remain dormant.
There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that recurrent HSV-1 infections could contribute to the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
