Updated 3/4: Hiker death still unexplained
State police say it's still unclear why a hiker from Glens Falls died in the back country over the weekend. Troopers say 21-year-old Andrew Nichols suffered a "medical event" on Sunday while trekking in the Dix Range near Keened in the Adirondack Park. An autopsy performed on Tuesday at the hospital in Plattsburgh proved inconclusive.
Troopers say they're waiting for more lab work before confirming the cause and manner of death. According to the Glens falls Post Star, Nichols was an experienced back country skier and climber who worked in the past at Gore and West Mountains.
A friend who was with Nichols at the time of his death reported that he became disoriented then fell unconscious. According to the newspaper, when rangers reached Nicholas, he was no longer breathing and had no pulse.
