Many young South Africans struggle to gain work experience after completing Grade 12. Employers often require experience, but finding an opportunity to gain that first experience can be difficult.  McDonald's South Africa is taking another deliberate step to help young people move from learning into the world of work, announcing the recruitment of 2,000 young people into its next Hospitality Learnership Programme. Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni says he survived an assassination attempt linked to taxi industry violence in 2006 or 2007. He says he was shot while leaving a social gathering in Pretoria North, and his friend was killed. Sibanyoni says he later left the taxi industry and worked in trucking for about three years. He says he returned to the taxi industry after government intervened following his media campaign.

Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni says he warned former Police Minister Bheki Cele about alleged criminal activity linked to killings in the taxi industry. He says the minister did not take action or convene a meeting. Sibanyoni says he was later shot twice in August 2022. He says he also approached former Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga about violence and problems within the taxi industry.

Sibanyoni says the findings reveal that taxi associations collect unaccounted “bucket money” from drivers daily or weekly. The money is allegedly used at the discretion of association executives sometimes on security or hitmen. Sibanyoni says the practice can contribute to violence in the taxi industry. He also explains “sock money”, where drivers keep money above the daily target set by taxi owners.

He says he is a director of several companies and owns more than 80 taxis, employing about 250 people. Sibanyoni says he is also a family man, businessman and community leader. He says he has always tried to conduct his affairs within the law. 

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says it is important for young people to understand the rules of war as conflicts continue to affect millions of people around the world. The University of Johannesburg and the ICRC lauched a board game that uses real-world conflict scenarios to challenge players to apply the rules of war under pressure, transforming complex legal principles into an engaging and practical learning experience.  The aim is to teach participants that even during war, the suffering of people must be limited by strict rules of human decency and legal restraint. The ANC has vowed to submit its councillor candidates list to the Independent Electoral Commission on time and even long before the commission's Friday deadline. Its leadership held a Special NEC on Thursday to ratify and adopt the party's over 10 thousand councillor candidates list before submitting it. All political parties wishing to contest the November 4 local elections are expected to submit their lists before the end of business on Friday. Our Politics Reporter Ntebo Mokobo has more. 

Parliament's Ad hoc committee, established to look into concerns of national security, is debating whether the placed on special leave Police minister, Senzo Mchunu, had sinister motives when he instructed the disbandment of the Political Killings Taskteam on the last day of 2024. Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe "Ferrari" Sibanyoni has told the Madlanga Commission that he strongly denies being part of any criminal organisation, cartel or syndicate. He says he has never directed, financed or taken part in unlawful activities. Sibanyoni also says his nickname, "Joe Ferrari", comes from his lifestyle and has no criminal meaning. He says he previously warned Police Minister about criminal networks and killings in the taxi industry.
