Make sure you select Domain Blocking List
You should also note the number of domain follows before hand so you know it works.
Note : if you DO select following list by mistake, as I have done here, it won't actually follow as you can only follow accounts not domains.
I took all the domains from [1] block list and put it in a csv file that can be imported so you can block all hateful instances.

How to import
go to settings
click on import & export
click on import
under import select domain blocking list
then select the csv file you downloaded
click upload
