Nobody wants to be weary and wrecked from the stress of racing through life.

The speed and stress of life is exhausting

Weariness often causes unwanted wreckage

Everyone wants a better life, and to be better at life.

Destinations aren’t a result of desire but daily habits.

Better comes from different habits not doing more of the same.

Problem: The stress and speed of life often leave us weary and wrecked.

Americans are among the most stressed people in the world, according to a new survey. And that’s just the start of it. New York Times

American Psychological Association-Survey The survey revealed a “secondary health crisis” and found that in addition to difficulties managing stressors… Today- March 2021

“People are really reporting that they are engaging in some pretty significant unhealth coping behaviors.” “…I think we’re seeing a pattern, and unhealthy coping behaviors that could really lead to some negative physical and mental health consequences.” Vaile Wright: Clinical psychologist and the senior director of health care innovation at the APA

“We know we all do maladaptive things to cope” with stress, Evans said. “The issues is the magnitude of the problems we’re seeing as a result of those behaviors.” NBC News 3/2021

How do we not settle for escapism, but find relief in real rest so we avoid staying weary and wrecked?

How do we find relief from the speed and stress in a way that doesn’t leave us weary and wrecked?

Sabbath: Stop work  Sabbath: Settle in

God given rhythms of rest: Daily—Evening, Weekly—Day of rest (no work), Annually –3 weeks (Deuteronomy 16:16), Decade –Rest and release, Lifetime—Year of Jubilee

Practice the rhythm of intentionally making space for rest, replenishment, and restoration.

What is a “Sabbath”?

How do we “Sabbath”?

Sabbath: Give effort to intentionally make space for rest, replenishment and restoration. (stopping & settling)

Why: Without regular rhythms of rest, replenishment, and restoration we get sick and dysfunctional.

How: COMMIT, GUARD, PRACTICE

Sabbath is the self-care that gives the relief to life’s speed and stress that self-medication cannot provide.

Scripture

On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation. Genesis 2:2-3
