Uruguay Legalized Euthanasia

The sanctity of human life has been further discarded in Uruguay following a vote to legalize euthanasia. The country, which legalized abortion in 2012, will now allow for patients to be directly killed by a doctor. The legislation itself mirrors much of Canada’s legislation as there is no requirement for terminal illness and no waiting period. To be eligible to be killed individuals must be suffering from an “incurable illness” which causes “unbearable suffering”. Currently the legislation does not allow euthanasia for minors, though we have seen that where euthanasia is legalized, the so-called safeguards often fall away.  When the sanctity of human life becomes an afterthought, legislation like this continues to expand and more lives are taken.
