A federal judge in Boston has limited lawsuits challenging U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order on mail-in voting. The ruling allows Democratic-led states and voting rights groups to seek relief related to the order's impact on November's elections.
U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani said the potential effect of the executive order on upcoming midterm elections and primaries requires timely judicial review. However, the judge also cited uncertainties surrounding how federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Postal Service, will implement the order, leading to the dismissal of challenges related to elections beyond the November 3 midterms.
The lawsuits were filed by voting rights groups, 23 states, and the District of Columbia, who argue that the executive order is unconstitutional and exceeds presidential authority over election administration.
