What is Generative Fill

Adobe has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Adobe Firefly is the engine that is using a database of images to power their AI engine.

One of the most exciting new AI features in Photoshop is Generative Fill. This tool uses Firefly to create images from Keywords within seconds.

How does Generative Fill work?

Generative Fill analyzes the content of your image (right now whatever is visible) and generates new content matching the image, lighting, and color palette. If you generate clouds on top of existing clouds, the result will return seamless images that can replace, or expand an image.

Generative Fill, just like other AI generators like Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion, all use keywords to generate content. If you don’t use a keyword, Adobe will turn the image it sees into a series of keywords, then use those to add to the image on screen.

And if nothing is on the screen, Adobe will randomize an image. You get 3 variations to choose from, which makes this a great feature that stands out from the other AI generators.

Can You Use Generative Fill in Video?

The short answer is YES. Keep in mind, generative fill does not make moving images yet. So the image above, you won’t get clouds floating or rivers flowing.

However, you can add to the pixel count, or change the pixels inside of a video with generative fill.

For example, this image is my studio with generative fill added. This turned a 1080p video into 4K, and with more creative ideas, could create frames for larger videos.

How to add Generative fill to Video

There are a few ways to do this. In my video, I show a simple way of making a frame around the original video. You can then use it in Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, Davinci Resolve, or many other video programs that can add overlays in PNG format.

Why PNG?

You can also use JPG, but a PNG is not only cleaner, but it can create the Alpha so you can put your video underneath the image layer. Doing it this way, you can hide imperfections.

Can I use Photoshop Video Options?

Absolutely. You can also use Adobe After Effects.

What About Live Streaming Video?
