Use Your Judgment... But Don't Be Judgmental

Is being judgmental wrong?  That's what we are taught.
 
But if it is, how do we protect ourselves and our loved ones?  Doesn't that require making a judgment?  And in those situations, are we not told to trust our gut, to trust ourselves and make a judgment call?

So which is it???  Good or bad?  Right or wrong? 
Is there a way to make a judgement, without being judgmental?
