Xaiver uses molasses as a way to explore empire, enslavement, colonialism, and capitalism through the creation, transportation, and consumption of the sweetener. We explore ways for students to put themselves into recipes to connect to the past and how we can use our historical imagination to connect to people who were not able to leave their own records behind.
