Using Music in Caregiving – Charlotte Today Audio Segment

After a loved one passes, many caregivers often wish that they had captured their life story. There are many templates that can help you document a loved one’s story using written memoirs, audio recordings, video interviews or a combination. But have you ever thought of capturing a loved one’s life story through the music that defined their life? Friend of the show and aging expert Anthony Cirillo has and he’s here to talk about a new offering called Memoir in Music.

  1. What is a Memoir in Music?
    1. Using a simple template, you and your loved one work together to create a “Life Playlist”—a collection of the 15 or so songs that have shaped their journey. Then, I will lead a free, personalized music session for both.
    2. So tell me more about the template and some of the questions they need to think about.
      1. Yes, that’s the fun part. Let me throw some at you and see if you can answer them. You will soon get the idea.
      2. OK, they come up with their list then what?
        1. They send it back to me. I review and then learn the songs.
        2. I schedule a Zoom with the caregiver to learn more about their loved one and explore their song choices so I am prepared for our music session.
        3. We schedule a session through Zoom.
        4. What happens during the session?
          1. We start with a conversation about the loved one.
          2. I preview the first song and ask about why they chose that song, exploring the memories and emotions tied to each song.
          3. I’ll perform the songs live.
          4. We’ll check in after each one to reflect on how it made they feel.
          5. The session is recorded and then the caregiver and loved-one have a legacy item to preserve.
