Using Supercomputing to Simulate Earthquakes – Intel® Chip Chat episode 320

Listen Later

Dr. Alexander Heinecke from the Parallel Computing Lab at Intel chats about his PRACE ISC award-winning research into earthquake simulations. The team of computer scientists, mathematicians, and geophysicists simulated vibrations comparable to an earthquake inside the Merapi volcano on the island of Java. They ran the SeiSol simulation software on the SuperMUC high performance computer, which executed 1.09 quadrillion floating point operations per second and used all of the 147,456 processor cores. Research like this, using even more powerful supercomputers, will enable further detailed simulations in a faster time, leading to deeper insights and scientific breakthroughs.
