Business Is Hard

Using Your Passion To Make Money

Listen Later

Have you ever heard the saying, “do what you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life?” According to hosts Brandon Cockrell and Misty Romero, this phrase can be devastatingly misleading. In today’s episode, Brandon and Misty discuss how to properly monetize your passion.

When Brandon entered the workforce, he was thrilled to have a job opportunity doing what he loves most: golfing. However, the initial excitement quickly wore off when he realized that he was mixing passion and money. Since he relied on this job to pay his bills, Brandon no longer felt the love for golf he once had. To reconnect with his passion, Brandon had to start a business doing something completely different and reintroduce golf as his hobby and not his job. The only way to healthily monetize your passion is to do it because you love it, not because you need the money.

Tune into this week’s episode of Fail Fast to Success to learn the difference between using your passion to pay the bills and getting paid for your passion so you can increase your happiness, make money, and continue doing what you love to do.

Quotes:

• “I'm not teaching yoga from a place of I need to make money from my passion. I do this because I love it and enjoy it. I'm not wearing myself out, and it's so much more enjoyable this way.” (06:41-06:57 | Misty)

• “I think the whole saying ‘do what you love, and you won't have to work another day in your life,’ can be so misleading. Because you have to do what you love the way you love doing it for it to still be your passion.” (09:00-09:23 | Brandon)

• “You've got to have that one passion. If you start putting so much pressure on it and then you add that business element to it and that business element is extremely full of pressure to monetize it, you will start to despise that passion.” (11:27-11:48 | Brandon)

• “Using your passion to get paid and getting paid to enjoy your passion are two different things and thought processes.” (14:15-14:28 | Brandon)

• “You have to position yourself so that your passion doesn't become your prison.” (19:24-19:28 | Misty)
