Sabyasachi Chandra (Saby), Utilities Segment Head, North America, TCS discusses upcoming trends and business problems faced by Utilities in North America
Saby shares that how unlike other businesses, Utilities have started late in embracing digital and it is only since last 10-12 years that significant transformation are happening in this industry. As TCS works with number of Fortune 500 Utilities, a number of key trends have been observed. An important change is the need to make grid more resilient by capturing and utilizing real-time data to make it more intelligent. Hence Utilities are investing in Grid Modernisation. Another interesting change happening in North America geography is that retail energy market is opening up and now consumers can decide their energy retailers especially in states like Texas, Maryland, New York. This shift has made consumers more important stakeholders and hence energy retailers are working towards enhancing consumer experience. With Transactive Energy coming into play, third significant change that is been observed is that Utilities are re-thinking their business strategies by exploring new innovative business models to generate more revenue channels. While consumer, grid and new energy are changing what becomes more important is cyber security, especially considering the new regulations.
Saby explains the role TCS plays to help Utilities embrace the Digital Transformation and Emerging Energy Value Ecosystem. TCS partners closely with CXOs of Utilities and help them create strategy for their short term and long term plans. TCS is engaged in phase zero which means at the time the new initiatives are being conceived. TCS is addressing the transformation changes with its corporate strategy of Business 4.0. Business 4.0 is based on 4 business pillars of embracing risk, leveraging ecosystem, mass personalization and enhancing value. The 4 technology pillars focus on cloud, automation, intelligence and analytics. This entire framework helps Utilities in their Digital Transformation journey and helps them become the Utility of Future. Saby goes ahead and shares multiple examples to showcase how Business 4.0 is making Utilities embrace the change.
