DEALER’S CHOICE - This time its James’ turn in the chair as he takes ups back to 2007 to a film he went to the cinema to watch not once, not twice, but thrice! Vacancy, directed by Nimród Antal, stars Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson as a married couple who become trapped in an isolated roadside motel, where they discover the room has been rigged to film gruesome snuff movies.
Antal approached the film as a tribute to classic suspense thrillers, particularly Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, favouring tension, confined locations, and psychological suspense over excessive gore, and although reviews were mixed on release, critics generally praised the film’s stripped-back approach to horror and its emphasis on suspense instead of graphic violence.
The film was supported by an inventive marketing campaign that included a toll-free phone number advertised alongside the trailers. Calling the number connected fans to the fictional motel, where the proprietor offered “killer deals” and “slashed prices” while distant screams played in the background.
