(8.13.24)
In the Torah portion Va'etchanan, Moses continues his final speech to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. The name "Va'etchanan" means "And I pleaded" or "And I besought" referring to Moses' heartfelt appeal to Yahuah to allow him to enter the land with the people. Despite Moses' fervent plea, יהוה denies his request, reminding him that Yahusha (Joshua) will lead the Israelites into the land instead. The parashat includes a restatement of the Ten Commandments and the Shema, a central declaration of the oneness of יהוה and the command to love יהוה with all one's heart, soul, and might.
Moses emphasizes the importance of obedience to Yah's laws as the Israelites prepare to settle in the land of Canaan. He urges the people to remember the covenant made with יהוה at Mount Sinai and to teach these laws to their children, ensuring that future generations remain faithful. Moses also warns against idolatry and emphasizes that the Israelites' success and longevity in the land depend on their adherence to Yahuah's commandments. The parashat highlights themes of faith, obedience, and the deep love and reverence for יהוה that should guide the lives of Yashar'el.
