Daily Ski Conditions for Vail, Colorado

The good news is that fresh powder is on its way to Vail, and conditions are shaping up nicely for the next week. Right now, the mountain is sitting pretty with 94 centimeters of snow at the summit and 50 centimeters at the base, with that last dump coming in on February 3rd. Snow quality is gripping, which means you've got some solid riding underneath you, though I should mention that currently 70 percent of the slopes are open with 23 of the 34 lifts spinning.

As of a recent on-mountain report from early February, conditions in the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin are a bit thin in places, with some exposed rocks and grass showing through, so you'll want to stick to the groomers and main runs if you're visiting this week. That said, things are about to get a whole lot better. The weather pattern is switching around February 10th, and snow is expected to move in starting Wednesday, February 11th, bringing up to 2 inches initially. Then things get really interesting on Thursday the 12th when the forecast calls for 1 to 4 inches of new snow, which should dramatically improve conditions across the mountain.

Looking at your five-day outlook, today and tomorrow are clear and relatively mild with highs around 47 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect for spring-like laps if you're into that kind of thing. But come Wednesday, it's going to cool down significantly with highs in the low 40s and that fresh snow arriving. Thursday brings the heaviest action with temperatures dropping into the mid-30s and another round of snow. Friday and Saturday should be clear and cold, with highs in the mid-30s and low teens at night, which means that new snow will set up beautifully. Sunday looks to stay cloudy with temps in the low 40s.

In the next 7 days, you're looking at roughly 5 inches of new snow forecast, and potentially up to 8 inches over the next 14 days according to long-range models. That's a solid pattern setting up, especially if you can time your visit for mid-week when the fresh stuff is falling. The snow line will be dropping as the week progresses, eventually reaching resort level by Thursday, so even lower elevations will be getting blanketed.

One thing to keep in mind is that February is typically a quieter month for crowds, and with fresh snow coming, you're looking at a pretty solid window to get some quality runs in before the busy spring season kicks in. Pack layers since temperatures are variable, and definitely bring your goggles because the pow is coming.
