Not the best, but it was early in Ruth Rendell's career
Not the best, but it was early in Ruth Rendell's career. It was still a good read and had a good ending. Now, I have read all of her books and I will miss her genius. I will read them again in the years to come.
Five Stars
Great book!
Early Rendell Shows Promise
Alice is very happy in her new marriage, although she is very conscious of the fact that, at 38, she is 9 years older than her husband. A very wealthy woman, Alice becomes worried when she is unable to contact a younger, more glamorous friend; she finds her attempts to locate the young woman thwarted time and time again, not least because she suddenly finds herself quite unwell, a new situation for this woman who has always been completely healthy. As time passes and the mystery of her friendâs disappearance deepens, she begins to wonder if her younger, very handsome husband might somehow be involvedâ."Vanity Dies Hard" is, I think, only Ruth Rendellâs third novel, and the reader can sense the way she is becoming more assured at handling her characters and, especially, their interactions. I figured out the solution to Aliceâs situation quite early on, but that didnât stop me from enjoying the way the author took the reader through to the end. Itâs odd to think that this book, published in 1966, is some 50 years old; our current world is utterly changed from the one she describes! Quite enjoyable.
The Lady Vanishes
Vanity Dies Hard (1966) was an early Ruth Rendell novel in which the future mystery writing superstar shows she was not averse to thinking outside the box even just out of the gate. While her âinvestigator,â a nearly middle aged woman, sounds like a typical lady mystery writerâs protagonist, Alice Whittaker is not exactly a Miss Marple style inveterate snoopster. In fact, sheâs a bundle of nerves who only looks into the mysterious disappearance of her younger friend Nesta with great reluctance and constant self-questioning. She badly fumbles several investigative attempts and threatens to unravel psychologically the deeper she gets.
This state of affairs does allow Rendell to experiment with writing a psychological thriller, something she would eventually be noted for. This early effort though is a bit hit and miss as the narrative, given from Aliceâs perspective, veers from sharply observed to semi-coherent. The big twist is the ending, which I wonât give away but which I thought was Rendellâs way to trying to make an early-career impact a la Agatha Christie with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
