Variations for the 2nd Week of Easter: Called to Worship

Listen Later

This is a supplemental episode to the main Prayer for the week. It includes variations on the week's liturgy focus, the call to Worship. This is an experiment. Please let us know if it is helpful to you.

Call to Worship #1
Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come to him with thanksgiving and sing psalms of praise.
For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth and the mountains.
The sea belongs to him—he made it. His hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us worship and bow down.
Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for he is our God.
We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care.
— from Psalm 95
Call to Worship #2
Silence is praise to you, Zion-dwelling God, and also obedience.
You hear the prayer in it all.
We all arrive at your doorstep sooner or later, our sins too much for us—
but you get rid of them once and for all.
Blessed are the chosen! Blessed the guest at home in your place!
We expect our fill of good things in your house.
Far and wide all creation comes to a stop, and stares in awe, in wonder.
Dawn and dusk take turns calling, “Come and worship.”
Oh, visit the earth, ask her to join the dance! Creation was made for this!
Let it all shout, and shout, and shout! Oh, oh, let them sing!
— from Psalm 65
Call to Worship #3
I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.
My soul will boast in the lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.
I sought the Lord, and he answered, he delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant; their faces never covered with shame.
Taste, see that the Lord is good; blessed are they who take refuge in him.
Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing.
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, his ears attentive to their cry;
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
The Lord redeems his servants; no one will be condemned who takes refuge in him.
— from Psalm 34
Call to Worship #4
O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you!
I will praise your name, my God!
You have done wonderful things,
You are a refuge to the needy in their distress.
You will destroy the shroud on this mountain.
You will swallow up death forever!
Then the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces,
He will take away the disgrace of his people from the earth.
This is the Lord for whom we have waited;
Let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation!
— from Isaiah 25
Call to Worship #5
Let us all say, Lord, be merciful.
Lord Almighty, the God of our fathers; We implore you, hear us.
For the peace which is from above, and for the salvation of our souls;
We implore you, Lord.
For the peace of the world, and the unity of all the churches of God;
We implore you, Lord, hear us.
For our deliverance from all tribulation, wrath, danger, distress, from captivity, bitter death, and from our iniquities;
We implore you, Lord, hear us.
For people waiting for your rich and plenteous mercy,
We implore you, be merciful and gracious.
Save your people, O Lord and visit your world in mercy and compassion.
We implore you, most merciful Lord, hear us praying to you, and have mercy upon us. Amen.
— from The Liturgy of Saint James, (300s CE)
