Financial advisors don't have a technology problem. They have an infrastructure problem.
You buy the CRM. The AI notetaker. The planning software. The dashboard. Another tool gets added because it's supposed to make the practice more efficient.
Then you look up and you've got a dozen logins, systems that don't talk to each other and data scattered across your entire tech stack.
Jessica Perez has spent more than 20 years in financial services, including senior leadership at Carson Group, and today works with advisory firms at MileMarker.
I brought her on Vaulted Views because she spends a lot of time thinking about the infrastructure underneath a modern advisory firm.
We get into what happens when your CRM, financial planning software, reporting tools and AI each have a different piece of the picture. Jessica explains why connected data matters, what a unified data infrastructure can look like, and how AI changes the conversation around what financial advisors should build, buy or partner for.
That last part is important to me.
I don't think the goal is for every financial advisor to become a technology company.
The goal is to build the right systems around the advisor so the technology does what it's supposed to do: give you more time to advise, build relationships and grow the business.
In this episode, we cover:
Jessica shares one example I thought was pretty incredible: one MileMarker partner reported saving 38 hours a month on basic reporting.
That's the kind of number I care about.
Not because reporting is exciting. Because that's 38 hours that can go somewhere else.
I want my advisors advising. I want my marketing people marketing. I want my tech people doing tech.
And if you're trying to grow an independent advisory firm, I think that's the bigger AI conversation.
Not: What's the next tool I should buy?
What infrastructure, systems and partnerships do I need to build the firm I actually want?
That's something we're thinking about every day at Quotient.

What makes one financial advisory practice worth more than another?
You can spend 20 or 30 years building a book of business. But if you wait until you're ready to sell to start thinking about valuation and succession, you've probably waited too long.
And so I wanted to understand what this looks like from the financing side.
In this episode of Vaulted Views, I sit down with James Hughes, Head of Investment Advisory at Live Oak Bank, to talk about financial advisor M&A, practice valuations, succession planning, acquisitions, and what lenders actually look for when they're evaluating an advisory business. James has been underwriting advisor acquisitions, successions, and breakaways since 2013.
One of the ideas I want advisors to think about is pretty simple:
Build your practice to be bought long before you plan to sell it.
Because the things that can make you a stronger seller—clean systems, a transferable business, thoughtful succession planning—can also put you in a better position to become a buyer.
James and I dig into:
The bigger point is this: succession starts long before the exit.
The decisions you make today — around systems, growth, ownership, and structure — are already shaping what your business may be worth tomorrow.
Every financial advisor is asking the same question:
Will AI replace me... or make me better?
That's the low view.
The vaulted view is asking a different question:
How do I use AI to become a better advisor?
In this episode of Vaulted Views, I sit down with Chris Mendoza, Head of Research at 15 Equity and one of the few people I know who lives at the intersection of artificial intelligence, investment research, and financial advisory businesses.
Chris holds a Master's in Applied Artificial Intelligence from the University of San Diego—before ChatGPT ever became mainstream—and spends his time helping advisors think differently about AI.
Not as a shortcut.
Not as a replacement.
As leverage.
Together we explore how financial advisors can use AI to improve investment research, strengthen client relationships, automate operational workflows, and build practices that become more valuable over time.
One idea from this conversation really stood out to me.
For decades, an advisor's competitive advantage was knowledge.
Today, AI has access to knowledge too.
The advisors who win won't simply know more.
They'll use AI to sharpen their judgment while spending more time doing what only humans can do: building trust, providing context, and helping clients make better decisions.
The firms that pull ahead over the next decade won't be the ones with access to better AI.
They'll be the ones who build better systems, develop better judgment, and create more time for the conversations that matter most.
That's the future we're building toward.

Does work-life balance actually exist?
People ask me that question all the time.
Over the course of five weeks, I went from interviewing as an EY Entrepreneur Of The Year finalist, to raising money for children fighting cancer in Las Vegas, to spending Derby weekend in Louisville, to preparing for Ignite 2026 with the financial advisors building Quotient Advisor Partners.
From the outside, it looks like completely different worlds.
To me, it's one life.
In this episode of Journey to 1 Million, I share why I've stopped thinking about work-life balance and started thinking about alignment instead.
We also dive into one of the biggest questions facing financial advisors today:
What happens when AI knows everything you know?
During my EY finalist interview, one of the judges asked how artificial intelligence will change wealth management. My answer has become one of the core beliefs behind everything we're building at Quotient.
The future of financial advice won't belong to the advisors who simply know the most.
It will belong to the advisors who use AI to become more human.
In this episode:
Behind the scenes of the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year finalist process
The AI question every financial advisor should be asking
Why knowledge is no longer your competitive advantage
What the new moat looks like for independent financial advisors
Inside the Baller Dream Foundation and why giving back matters
Lessons from the Kentucky Derby that apply to business and investing
Why alignment beats work-life balance
A preview of Ignite 2026 and what's next for Quotient Advisor Partners
This series follows the journey of building a platform designed to help 1 million American households retire with clarity and confidence through financial advisors.

What happens if the SEC comes knocking on your door?
Most financial advisors spend years mastering markets, client relationships, and business development.
Far fewer spend time understanding the regulatory environment they're operating in until they're forced to.
That's the low view.
The vaulted view is understanding the terrain before you ever have to navigate it.
In this episode of Vaulted Views, I sit down with Nick Morgan, former SEC Senior Trial Counsel, who spent seven years prosecuting SEC enforcement cases before spending nearly two decades defending investment advisors. Few people have seen the regulatory process from both sides the way Nick has.
Together, we discuss how SEC examinations become enforcement investigations, why regulatory awareness matters for every independent advisor and RIA, and what advisors should understand about the system they're operating within.
This conversation is also personal.
My father, Ray Lucia Sr., challenged the SEC all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in Ray Sr. Lucia v. SEC, a landmark case that changed how administrative law judges are appointed. That experience shaped the way I think about regulation, leadership, and the responsibility advisors have to understand the profession they're building, not just the clients they serve.
This episode isn't about fear.
It's about awareness.
Because building a great advisory business isn't just about growing AUM, improving operations, or implementing AI. It's also about understanding the rules, responsibilities, and realities that come with independence.
If you're serious about building a durable advisory practice, this is a conversation worth having.
Because the advisors who build firms that last don't just understand markets.
They understand the environment they operate in.
Everyone is talking about AI. Very few are showing financial advisors where to start.
In this episode of Vaulted Views, I share the exact playbook we've been building inside Quotient to help advisors move beyond experimenting with AI and start building real systems.
Here's what I believe:
The firms that win over the next decade won't simply use AI. They'll build their business around it.
LPL. Orion. Anthropic. Schwab.
The biggest names in wealth management have already made their bet. AI is becoming table stakes. The real opportunity isn't having access to AI. It's building proprietary systems that reflect how you serve clients and run your practice.
This isn't about replacing advisors. It's about making great advisors dramatically more effective.
If you're serious about building a modern advisory practice that scales through systems instead of simply adding more people, this episode is for you.
In this episode, you'll learn:

Everyone is talking about AI.The real question is who's building with it.In this episode of Vaulted Views, I take you behind the scenes and show you exactly how we're using AI inside the Quotient Advisor ecosystem. Not as a productivity hack. Not as a chatbot. As infrastructure.Because here's what's happening...LPL expanded its partnership with Anthropic. Orion did the same thing. Schwab recently reported that 63% of RIAs are already using AI in some capacity. The adoption curve isn't coming. It's already here. But that's not the vaulted view. The vaulted view is realizing that AI itself will become table stakes.Every advisor will have access to the same tools. The advisors who win will be the ones who build systems on top of them.Systems that reflect how they serve clients.Systems that reflect how they think.Systems that create leverage across their business. In this episode, I show you the actual systems we're using today, including:
This isn't about replacing people. It's about making the people you already have dramatically more effective. It's about creating leverage. And ultimately, it's about helping more advisors serve more clients at a higher level.Because my mission hasn't changed:Help 1 million American households retire with confidence through financial advisors.AI is simply helping us scale that mission one system at a time.⏱ TIMESTAMPS0:00 — The AI Shift Is Already Happening0:47 — Why Most Advisors Are Missing the Real Opportunity1:19 — Showing the Receipts: AI Systems in Action1:35 — Building an Automated Content Engine2:12 — Why We Use Multiple AI Models2:36 — Workflow Automation & Self-Managing Systems3:54 — Building Financial Models with AI4:19 — Creating Software with AI4:57 — Meet "Junior Ray"6:35 — AI Agents & Digital Team Members7:20 — Custom AI Skills for Financial Advisors7:58 — Scaling the Mission Through AI---👉 Join the Quotient Advisor Community: https://quotientadvisor.com👉 Subscribe to my newsletter: https://rayluciajr.com/newsletter👉 Subscribe for weekly Vaulted Views episodes👉 Follow me on Instagram: / rayluciajr 👉 Connect with me on LinkedIn: / rayluciajr 👉 Follow me on X: https://x.com/rayluciajr
