It seems like being a vegan and getting a tattoo... or two... or 50... goes hand in hand. Keeping the process vegan and cruelty free can be a bit of an adventure. Have a guide or at least knowing what to ask and what to look out for can be a great help. Welp, that's what we're here for!

I recently started my first sleeve and had an amazing experience with my artist, Carlos Fuentes [instagram] of Mystic Owl Tattoo. I was lucky enough to work with a shop that already followed a vegan practice. However, I wanted to share some things to be aware of as well as what to expect when you start your tattoo journey.

Vegan Tattoos - Gotch yas!

Ink

  • Watch out for
    • bone char, glycerin from animal fat, gelatin, or shellac
  • Non-vegan
    • MOMS Nuclear / Millennium
  • Vegan
    • Eternal
    • Intenze
    • Kuro Sumi

Transfer Paper

  • Watch out for
    • lanolin or animal based waxes
  • Vegan
    • RepoFX Spirit VEGAN THERMAL Transfer Paper

Razor / Soap

  • Watch out for
    • glycerin from animal fat, gelatin, or lanolin
  • Non-vegan
    • Most cheap razors and "green soap"
  • Vegan
    • Dr. Bronner's

Aftercare

  • Watch out for
    • beeswax, lanolin, or animal based oil
  • Non-vegan
    • Most lotions and balms
    • The popular option, "Aquafor", is not vegan!
  • Vegan
    • Jason
    • Skinfix lotion / tattoo balm
    • Coconut Oil
