Hex and Muse

Velvet Shadows - The Vampire’s Mirror

Listen Later

Tonight, Hex & Muse takes a darker turn - slipping into the gothic silk and shadow of one of the most enduring archetypes in myth, literature, and film: the vampire.

From ancient folklore to Carmilla’s kiss and Dracula’s infamous arrival, we trace the vampire’s transformation - through plague and poetry, through Hammer Horror and haute couture. We unravel their fashion, their symbolism, and the way they reflect our deepest fears: of death, desire, and disappearing.

Are vampires real? Maybe not in the crypt.
But in the mirror? In the stories we keep telling?
 That’s another tale...

Whether you’re drawn to the blood-soaked legends of Eastern Europe, queer subtext in 19th-century novellas, or the lace collars of cinematic immortality this episode explores how the vampire became something we no longer fear… but envy.

Hex & Muse is recorded on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. I pay my deepest respects to their Elders past and present - and to all First Nations people, whose stories and spirits continue to shape this land.
