Venezuela has detained several Americans as tensions with US rise

As of January 2026, Venezuelan security forces have reportedly detained at least five American citizens in recent months. These detentions have occurred alongside an intensified U.S. campaign involving military and economic pressure against the government of Nicolás Maduro.  Among those held is James Luckey-Lange, a 28-year-old from Staten Island, New York, who was last heard from on December 8, 2025, after entering Venezuela from Guyana.
