Welcome to the latest episode of Movie Review Talk with Scott Mantz! On this episode, Scott, Shawn Edwards, and Jay Washington are discussing three new releases – Venom, The Hate U Give, A Star Is Born, and Monsters and Men. The critics also give their thoughts on the Three Identical Strangers Blu-ray that is coming out soon and the Reversing Roe documentary which is available on Netlfix.

Venom, from Sony Pictures, is directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer and stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom along with Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate, and Woody Harrelson. Sony’s synopsis for the film reads: One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award-nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

A Star Is Born is a remake of a remake of a remake and yet its getting incredible buzz coming out of film festivals and early press screenings. The film stars Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga and it is also Cooper’s directorial debut. In this new take on the tragic love story, Cooper plays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally (Gaga).

The Hate U Give is the latest from director Notorious director George Tillman Jr. The film is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by author Angie Thomas and stars Amandla Stenberg as a young girl named Starr Carter. Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.

Monsters and Men comes from writer/director Reinaldo Marcus Green and focuses on the story of the shooting of an unarmed black man during an altercation with police officers and divides the narrative into three sections – a witness to the incident who captured the violent act on camera, a conflicted cop who is a witness to racism on his own force, and a high school athlete who is inspired to activism by the shooting. While the three men don’t know each other, this one incident affects them all so deeply, pushing them to ask questions about truth, justice and the consequences of life-altering actions.

Three Identical Strangers is the much talked about, shocking and absolutely moving documentary about three triplets who were separated at birth and found each other later in life. They experienced the joy of reunion and worldwide fame and notoriety for their story, but it all came with a price eventually that fractured their connection and led to a shocking tragedy.
