Verbose Mode TV - 2x07 - Russian Rocket Retrofit

Listen Later

Welcome to Verbose Mode TV, the show dedicated to learning to learn and the freedom to fail.   Today we are going to go through the process of retrofitting a vintage Russian rocket lamp my wife bought me on eBay and what I learned building my own internals and frame for it.   The new lamp base with M2.5 standoffs is available on Tinkercad. As of this writing, the code is just the strandtest.ino from Adafruit’s Neopixel Library. All I’ve done is altered which functions run in Loop and some of their parameters. There is ZERO original code in here.   Notes and Links   I’ve created a basic eBay search to find the lamp in question   Tinkercad Model: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/h6T7eLDqPqp-russian-rocket-retrofit GitHub: https://github.com/VerboseModeTV/Rocket_Lights   The ESP-01 programmer I bought is no longer available. Here is the next cheapest one on Amazon at this time. Alternately I could have used a breadboard with some extra components and an FTDI device from either Adafruit or SparkFun.   The Neopixel (WS2812b) ring I used is from Adafruit, but other ones can be found cheaper.   I mention learning about Tinkercad from an episode of KnowHow. That can be found here: https://twit.tv/shows/know-how/episodes/376   The 3mm standoff I used is by “Matthew Mead 260” here: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/kLj2SZ4O5f6-arduino-standoff-3mm-screws#/   My test piece for finding the right size for a screw hole is here: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/dDRG3pDI2X5-screw-hole-tests   Adafruit’s Uberguide to Neopixels talks about power requirements and more: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neopixel-uberguide   Some other animation libraries I have in my notes for future upgrades:   Open Pixel Control: http://openpixelcontrol.org This one I found in an article on Hackaday. The code is by "HansLuijten": https://www.tweaking4all.com/hardware/arduino/adruino-led-strip-effects/   If you like the show, please join in the conversation on social media and help promote the show at any of the links below:
