TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Vernon J. Baker | From Baker's Medal of Honor citation: "Lieutenant Baker's fighting spirit and daring leadership were an inspiration to his men and exemplify the highest traditions of the military service."

That fighting spirit transcended the battlefield and into life as a black man in the military during WW2. Baker ultimately received his medal and recognition in 1997, some 53 years after his valor in combat.
