Vetting Violence: When Revolutions are Justified

Listen Later

In this episode, Drew and Alex take a step back from current events and discuss a topic that is more based in theory - when can violent revolution be justified? They cover many historic revolutions such as the Haitian Revolution, the Chinese Revolution, the Bolshevik Revolution, the European Revolutions of 1848, and many more. The two discuss when violent revolution could be necessary, and when the measures may not be justified. Both feel that revolution can be a necessary part of civil society, especially when the citizens of a government feel that their social contract has been violated. The two finish by relating this topic to current events in Venezuela, the United States, and the Middle East (Arab Spring). This is one of the more debate style episodes of “the Tonic Accord” as both agree and disagree on many aspects of this topic.
